A Haunting in Crystal Cove is the twenty-third episode of the first season of Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated.

Premise[]

Mayor Jones is being haunted in his own home, causing Fred to place his mystery-solving future on the line if he cannot get to the bottom of this haunting.

Synopsis[]

One night, Mayor Jones is examining a piece of Planispheric disc that he keeps in a safe above his bed. Suddenly there is someone outside of his door, and thinks it's Fred trying to get warm but he's asleep in bed. Suddenly there is a shout, causing Fred to wake up and see his dad running away in fear and a shadowy figure at the end of the hall.

The next day at school, Fred tells the gang how his dad has been running screaming down the hall and sleeping in the yard every night for the last two weeks. Shaggy offers to sleep over with Scooby and Velma says her mom has a selection of herbal sleep remedies in her shop. After Fred leaves for class, Daphne confides in Velma that she's worried that Fred is becoming obsessive about their relationship.

At the Spook Museum, Angie Dinkley prepares a sampling of herbal teas. Lady Marmalade, the new barista, appears and suggests the mayor needs an exorcist.

Shaggy and Scooby are spending the night at Fred's. A picture falls off the mantlepiece; it is Fred's mother who left when he was a baby. Shaggy and Scooby make themselves a snack and then watch a Vincent van Ghoul movie. They return to the kitchen to make pre-bed pizza.

Fred is awaken by his dad's scream, runs to the bedroom and finds objects flying around the bedroom and the mayor pinned to the ceiling. Fred calls Shaggy and Scooby, but the kitchen door slams shut and the pizza they were making comes to life and attacks the pair. Fred uses a fairway wood to drag his dad down. Shaggy and Scooby run from the kitchen and meet Fred and his dad in the hall. Running outside, the door closes and a shadowy figure is seen upstairs.

The next day at City Hall, Mayor Jones refuses to go back, but if Fred does and is driven screaming into the night, could he grab a few socks as the mayor's current ones are full of sunflower seeds. Fred needs his dad's help, and says if he can't solve what's happening, he'll give up mystery solving for ever and be whatever he wants him to be.

At the house, Fred sets up cameras to watch and record everything; Velma knows how to get them to work. Fred also invites Lady Marmalade to hold a seance. Her spirit board (ouija board) spells out "I am an old friend and I want what you took from me." Mayor Jones denies all knowledge of this, and the spirit board bursts into flames. Objects fly around the room and ghostly laughter can be heard. Everyone runs out of the house, except Mayor Jones who is pulled back in and the doors slam shut.

Lady Marmalade runs away, who screams in horror. The gang go around the back of the house and check out the video recordings, while Velma prepares that, Daphne comforts Fred, he than apologizes for being possessive, he was just scared to lose someone whom he cares about. After looking at the video, they find out he was never grabbed, Mayor Jones just stepped back into the house and slammed the doors himself. He takes the piece of the disk from his safe and then the gang hear him scream. Fred searches but can't find him. Scooby sniffs out sunflower seeds and a trap under the mayor's bed; it's one of Fred's, but it's been modified to shoot fire. Velma realizes that someone must've modified the traps to scare Mayor Jones. Fred states they would have to outsmart him (the gang doesn't buy that) but also says they would need access his computer and it would take a genius. The gang has just about solved the mystery, they just need to do one more thing.

The gang seal the house, modify the traps Fred has already set and wait. A shadowy figure floats around the house, unable to escape and attacked by the trophies, it is eventually pinned down by a pair of spears. The gang was posing as all the living trophies, as it turns out, the figure was none other than Professor Pericles, Velma says that he was the only other mind besides her that could have pulled this whole thing off. Professor Pericles put a trojan horse program on Fred's laptop to take control of all of the traps in the house and simulate a haunting (Fred's computer password was too obvious). After getting control of the traps, he was able to convince the Mayor of a fake haunting and since he was able to fly, he was able to make his shadow figure costume float. Unfortunately, his leftover sunflower seeds he was eating, really gave him away. He wanted the piece of the Planispheric Disk which Mayor Jones stole from him a long time ago.

Pericles escapes with the disk piece and the gang are dumped in the cellar, where the mayor has been tied up. He says the mystery is solved, but Daphne isn't sure.

Continuity[]

Notes/trivia[]

  • The Mystery Machine is absent in this episode.
  • This episode is the first time the face of Fred's absent mom has been shown and referred to.
  • In one shot, right after the gang has prepared their trap, they cluster around a desk and look at the camera in the exact pose they strike in the Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! opening theme(clarify: what pose ? The pose when they're reading the paper in the intro and then they look at the camera)
  • The name Lady Marmalade comes from the 1970s song, made famous by Patti LaBelle.
  • The code for the vault in which Fred Jones Sr., keeps his piece of the Planispheric Disk is '39#'. Episode #39 of the series is Wrath of the Krampus, which happens to be the one in which the gang obtains all six pieces of the disk. It is unclear whether the code deliberately foreshadows this or not.
  • The voice actor for the Evil Pizza is not credited.

Miscellaneous[]

Animation mistakes and/or technical glitches[]

  • TBA

Inconsistencies/continuity errors and/or goofs/oddities[]

  • How could Pericles spell the message on the spirit board?
    • Then again, he may have "trapped" it using one of his or Fred's traps.

Quotes[]

Mayor Jones: Oh Cartwheeling Kitchen Camels Fred. If you've snuck into here again to conserve body heat by lying across my legs...

Velma: Daphne, are you ok? You look... unperfect.
Daphne: Velma, when you were going out with Shaggy, did you ever have trust issues?
Velma: He dumped me for a dog. A dog! Then he started acting all, "I want you, Velma" again, before I sent him back to his dog. So, yeah, there were a few trust issues.

Daphne: I mean, I know he's complicated--.
Velma: No, he's not.

Scooby-Doo: (sees a picture of Fred's mom) Woah, ho, ho. She's hot.

Shaggy: You don't understand, dude. Like, food turned against us.
Scooby: There's no reason to go on living.
Velma: I'm sure you two will eat again. Probably in the next ten minutes or so.

Fred: You think my dad's soul could be unclean?
Lady Marmalade: Hmm, from your aura? It could definitely use a good washing.
