Her name is a reference to The Phantom of the Opera, where the title character favors the success of a young opera singer named Christine because he has a stalker crush on her.
There is a popular YouTube video with clips of Damon and Elena from The Vampire Diaries to the music of The Phantom of the Opera. This may be the source of her last name.
