The Cicada Creature is a creature comprising a swarm of regular cicadas used to disguise Grandma Moonbeam.

Physical appearance

The Cicada Creature is a swarm of thousands of live cicadas shaped like a much larger cicada. This larger monster appears black in form, but each individual cicada is brown. Similar to the insect, it has six legs of roughly the same length, but unlike a regular cicada it is sometimes shown standing on its hind legs, using the other legs as arms.

Personality

The Cicada Creature is a creature with a unique attack pattern. Initially, it threatens the victim via anonymous phone call, demanding in a very deep and breathy voice to quit Destroido Corp. If the target refuses, the Cicada Creature does not chase the victim on foot; instead, it prefers to send thousands of individual cicadas to swarm around the victim in masses, completely covering the victim. The Cicada Creature relies on the victim's fear of insects, a common phobia, to traumatize the victim, as cicadas are incapable of biting or stinging and thus unable to cause direct physical harm. To enhance the psychological effect of the attack, the Cicada Creature also tends to attack its victims in vulnerable locations, such as a car or shower, which are small and enclosed, making escape difficult.

Powers and abilities

Cicada manipulation: Using a sound emitter strapped to her torso, Moonbeam is able to manipulate thousands of cicadas to swarm around her and move in desired locations. Moonbeam drew inspiration from a documentary she saw on television, in which scientists manipulated penguins by playing a sound frequency.
Infiltration: The cicadas can be manipulated to enter enclosed locations in difficult ways. For example, it is able to enter a car via its air conditioning unit, and a shower via its drain. The Cicada Creature clearly has an extensive knowledge of the plumbing system at Destroido as it is able to navigate the pipes to reach the shower.

History

Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated

Season one

Grandma Moonbeam revealed — Grandma Moonbeam is revealed as the culprit.

After the inventor of Nature Slivers, Grandma Moonbeam, tried unsuccessfully to pressure Destroido Corp. to no longer use landfill waste, she created the Cicada Creature to attack the company. Via anonymous telephone call, she threatened an employee, Kelsepsian, ordering him to quit the company. When he refused, she attacked him in his car as the Cicada Creature, surrounding the car in thousands of cicadas and entering the vehicle via the air conditioning unit. Being attacked by thousands of insects, Kelsepsian ran his vehicle off the road and crashed. He was hospitalized for his injuries.

Despite being a clear threat to the public's safety, Crystal Cove's municipal government did not attempt to investigate the creature. Instead, they took advantage of the monster for publicity, treating it as real and organizing a Cicada Fair to celebrate the monster. However, the creature attacked a second victim, publicist Hugh Dederdee, while he was in the shower. In a similar fashion, the creature made threats via telephone, and when they were ignored, Dederdee was attacked by the insects in the shower. He was hospitalized and later suffered a cardiac arrest from the psychological trauma.

After threatening Mystery Inc. for attempting to investigate the crimes, as well as attacking CEO Ed Machine, the Cicada Creature appeared for the final time at the Cicada Fair. When Mystery Inc. went into the House of Spooky Things, the Cicada Creature appeared. However, they activated their trap, which used a vacuum cleaner to vacuum all the cicadas. With the Cicadas gone, the perpetrator, Grandma Moonbeam, was exposed for her crimes and subsequently arrested by Sheriff Bronson Stone. Rather than celebrating the downfall of a danger to society, the monster's capture was a disappointment to the town's mayor, who could no longer use the monster for publicity and tourism.
