Enrique had been chased from every town in Mexico before arriving in the town of Sierra Paz to rob them. Afterwards, he fled into the mountains to bury his gold, without knowing the only way out was back through the town, allowing the townspeople to trap him there with threats of putting him in prison. Ghostly noise eventually coming from the mountains led the town to change its name to Sierra Fantasma.

Eighty years after his disappearance, the Ghost of Enrique Ladrón began attacking the town of Sierra Fantasma, leading the sheriff to call in Mystery Inc. to investigate. Although the ghost was proven to be a hoax, the mastermind behind it was revealed to be the real Enrique Ladrón who, at 105 years old, had been discovered by two men looking for his gold. Refusing to deliver on his promise to give either of them any of his gold, despite them carrying out his revenge on the town, Enrique's gold was found anyway by the gang, thanks to some of Fred's Boy Scout knowledge.
