Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed is a 2004 film sequel to 2002's Scooby-Doo. The cast who play Mystery Inc. return, as does director and writer James Gunn.

Premise[]

Mystery Inc. have saved the world from certain doom, but that means nothing to their hometown, when a cloaked figure with a vendetta against the gang, brings to life the would-be monsters they unmasked in the past. Now Coolsville's "most wanted" for all the wrong reasons, they must prove once and for all they really are heroes, by putting an end to the mysterious fiend that's out to get them.

Synopsis[]

Having become celebrities of their hometown of Coolsville, Scooby-Doo, Shaggy, Velma, Daphne and Fred of Mystery Inc., have been invited to the grand opening of the Coolsonian Criminology Museum as the guests of honor, where their screaming fans watch them walk past. Accompanied by the gorgeous news reporter Heather Jasper Howe and other members of the press, the gang enter the museum to open an exhibit which is full of costumes of their former foes from past mysteries.

Shaggy and Scooby are frightened by the costumes, despite the fact that they are not alive. Velma reveals to Daphne and Fred that she has fallen in love with the museum's curator, Patrick Wisely, and Patrick also feels the same about Velma. Unfortunately, both of them are too afraid and worked up in their respective jobs to become a couple.

But this momentous occasion turns sour when a storm causes a power outage in the museum and a bolt of lightning shatters the window. In the middle of all this, Daphne notices a strange green mist floating about one of the glass cabinets. Daphne opens the curtain covering the cabinet and finds herself face to face with a terrifying and alive Pterodactyl Ghost. The prehistoric predator somehow became real and breaks free of its cage. The gang, believing it is simply a criminal in the costume, attempt to capture the pterodactyl in some curtains, but Shaggy and Scooby forget to tie the ropes together and are sent on a wild ride when their wrists get caught in the rope binding the pterodactyl and fly around the museum causing mayhem.

Just then, a mysterious masked villain calling himself the Evil Masked Figure appears and announces this is just the beginning of Mystery, Inc.'s demise. And with that, the Pterodactyl Ghost snatches up two monster costumes from the display, dumps Shaggy and Scooby into the Chickenstein costume and then takes off into the sky with the Evil Masked Figure in tow. After the robbery, Velma discovers a secret passage the pterodactyl came out of and also finds a real reptilian scale.

The following morning, Heather reports on the robbery and harshly criticizes the gang's tactics, even taking context from early video footage to make it sounds like Fred dislikes Coolsville. Meanwhile, Shaggy and Scooby are feeling extreme guilt over the incident and decide they will from now on act like real detectives and join the other three in the laboratory. Velma gets data from her reptile scale and confirms it is authentic. The gang proposes that the main villain is one of the foes they unmasked. Daphne believes Jonathan Jacobo, the original Pterodactyl Ghost, is the culprit, but Velma reveals he died after an attempted prison escape. The gang then decide that Jeremiah Wickles, the Black Knight Ghost and Jacobo's cellmate in prison, is behind the mystery and set out to his mansion to investigate.

Upon arriving at the mansion, the gang fall into a trap set up by Wickles, but Daphne frees the gang with her makeup kit and also frees a pair of salesmen and a buttercup scout who also fell into the trap. The gang then split up to search for clues. Scooby easily finds clues, but is oblivious to them and picks up a pair sunglasses and underwear instead. Shaggy finds a stereo-phone and breaks it. Fred, Velma and Daphne find shiny green footprints that lead to the library. Velma states that Wickles is obsessed with the supernatural. They find a book that instructs how to create carbon-based predators, or in other words: how to create monsters.

Shaggy and Scooby are reunited, Scooby carrying a pile of random items and dumping them on the floor. Scoob starts singing into a toilet brush and Shaggy discovers a sticky note on his paw. It reads that Wickles is visiting the Faux Ghost, a villains-only nightclub in the dark corners of the city. They quickly realize they have just discovered an actual clue and start celebrating. But a sudden evil chortle causes them to jump in shock, and Scooby lands in the arms of the Black Knight. Instinctively, Shaggy and Scooby run away and try to keep the Black Knight from entering the adjoining room by piling furniture in front of the door, but the knight appears through a secret passage.

Fred and the others appear and the Black Knight Ghost knocks out Fred. Daphne picks up an axe and battles the Black Knight, vandalizing Wickles' house in the process, while Velma scans the book for his weakness. The Black Knight gets the better of Daphne, but Velma finds his weak spot just in time and kicks him in the "round tables" as the Black Knight cries out in pain.

The gang then return to their headquarters and Shaggy and Scooby sneak out to the Faux Ghost in order to question Wickles. Velma announces that the glow of the footprints at the mansion and the reptile scale are both made of a substance called "randomonium". Patrick then arrives at the headquarters and Velma is suddenly stricken with fear, not wanting to interact with him. Wanting to help Velma boost her self-confidence, Daphne turns her into a "glamorous, mysterious, adventurous jet-setter hot babe" in an attempt to try and make Patrick fall in love with her. The four get into the Mystery Machine and head off to solve the mystery. Around this time, the 10,000 Volt Ghost and the Black Knight Ghost steal the rest of the costumes from the museum and the Skeleton Men and the Cotton Candy Glob are made into real monsters.

Shaggy and Scooby arrive at the Faux Ghost and find that the place is haunted by all of the criminals that had dressed up as monsters in the past. They disguise themselves and find Wickles, but discover he has nothing to do with the monsters. They are then found out and thrown out of the club.

Meanwhile, the others discover that the Coolsonian museum has been robbed again by the monsters and that they have hijacked all of the other costumes. Patrick leaves the museum in a fit of rage, and the gang are met with an angry mob outside the museum.

Shaggy and Scooby bump into Patrick in the alley and he tells them the news. Shaggy and Scooby then quickly dash off to follow Wickles to the Old Tyme Mining Town nearby. The two lose track of Wickles and decide to explore the silver plant nearby, but run into the Skeleton Men. The two flee from them and activate an elevator which they clamber into. Soon after, Fred, Daphne and Velma arrive at the mine and discover that Wickles is planning to turn the mine into a theme park, crashing Wickles' meeting with various investors in the process.

Down in the mines, Shaggy and Scooby find a laboratory and a fridge full of potions. Upon drinking these potions, they morph into several things including an alien, a woman, Taz from the Looney Tunes, a muscle-bound dimwit, and an intelligent scientist dog. Scooby uses his new-found intelligence to create an antidote, but Shaggy, wanting to remain strong, throws away one of the beakers Scooby's holding. This causes an explosion and has them found by the rest of the gang. Scooby then uses the remainder of his created antidote to change he and Shaggy back to normal. The gang then find a hidden room that has a giant machine in it. Velma figures that Patrick is actually the culprit. Fred, Daphne and Velma go to explore the rest of the caves nearby, leaving Shaggy and Scooby alone with the machine. The two find a control panel and unknowingly activate the machine while playing with it, bringing more monsters to life.

Shaggy and Scooby turn around and find themselves surrounded by the Zombie, Captain Cutler's Ghost, Miner 49er and the formidable Tar Monster. The other three return and help Shaggy and Scooby escape, Fred snatching the control panel and dodging his way in a Matrix-style through the attacks of the monsters. Mystery, Inc., flee to the elevator where a surge of electricity flies overhead and the 10,000 Volt Ghost appears. The gang get separated and flee from the 10,000 Volt Ghost and the Skeleton Men. The Evil Masked Figure confronts his new minions and tells them to hunt down the gang and get the control panel back.

Mystery, Inc., flee out of Coolsville as the monsters invade it. They retreat to their old high school clubhouse deep in the swamps. After doing some reminiscing on their youth and inspecting one of their first homemade gadgets, the gang discover that they can rewire the control panel so that it will reverse the randomonium effect and destroy the monsters. Meanwhile, Shaggy and Scooby wait outside the clubhouse and heavily criticize their role in the gang, labeling themselves as "screw-ups" and taking responsibility for all that has happened. As Shaggy skips a rock across the lake, Captain Cutler suddenly appears and the gang try to escape in the Mystery Machine. However, they are paused by Cutler when he fires some chains from his spear gun. Fred reverses the Mystery Machine into Captain Cutler causing him to go flying into the lake. Mystery, Inc., are chased through the city by the Pterodactyl Ghost and the Zombie nearby almost runs them over while driving an oil tanker truck. The gang lose the pterodactyl when it collides with a billboard.

The gang arrive back at the mine and are confronted by the Black Knight Ghost riding an armored horse. Fred finds a motorbike and uses a pipe as a lance and jousts against the Black Knight Ghost. The gang then runs into the 10,000 Volt Ghost who traps Daphne from the others. Daphne tries to fight the electrical ghoul, but is electrocuted and sent flying into the air, crashing down next to Fred. Fred is then defeated by the Black Knight Ghost and the two villains surround Fred and Daphne. Fred admits to Daphne he was scared and afraid to show his sensitive side the whole time, choosing to act macho instead in order to impress people.

Meanwhile, the other three nearly run into the Skeleton Men and when Velma instructs them to take the control panel to the machine, Shaggy and Scooby finally tell Velma how they've been feeling, claiming that they are not heroes and they only screw things up. However, Velma makes the two change their minds when she tells them how much she idolizes them and how she wishes she could be more care-free and fun like them. Now motivated by Velma's pep talk, Shaggy and Scooby head off for the mines, but bump into Miner 49er and run from him after he tries to burn them with his fiery breath. Velma distracts the Skeleton Men and one even tries to hit Velma by lobbing the other skeleton's head at her, but it misses and the skull ends up stuck in a door. Meanwhile, Fred and Daphne are still trapped by the Black Knight Ghost and 10,000 Volt Ghost. Daphne spies some jumper cables in the Mystery Machine. Fred connects the cables to the Black Knight Ghost and Daphne hurls a metal rod with attached jumper cables into the 10,000 Volt Ghost's body knowing she'll get electrocuted again. The two flee as the 10,000 Volt Ghost's body is sucked into the Black Knight Ghost, causing a massive explosion. The 10,000 Volt Ghost is destroyed and the Black Knight Ghost's charred helmet rolls away, his last words being "Oh, crap!"

Velma escapes the Skeleton Men by jumping into a coal chute, tumbling down into an underground mine. Shaggy and Scooby lure Miner 49er into a trap. Scooby farts at the same time the miner breathes fire and fries Miner 49er. Velma discovers a man-made shrine to Jacobo and the Pterodactyl Ghost. Upon realizing the shrine actually belongs to Patrick, Velma flees from him in fear. Velma nearly falls to her death after a panel on the catwalk gives way, but Patrick saves her before he is captured by the Pterodactyl Ghost. Shaggy and Scooby run into the giant, but edible, form that is the Cotton Candy Glob and eat him alive, with him screaming that he'll give them serious cavities.

The gang are then reunited and run into the Monster Hive, but are confronted by the Evil Masked Figure, the Zombie, Miner 49er, and a fused form of the Skeleton Men. Fred attempts to race to the monster machine, but the Tar Monster appears and traps him in tar. He then grabs Daphne and Velma, who is lying on the floor, and grabs Shaggy with his tar tentacles afterward. Backed into a corner and realizing that all his friends are about to suffocate, Scooby finds a fire extinguisher which amazingly freezes the Tar Monster's body. Scooby flies about freezing the Tar Monster and then smashes through his body. He then falls into chunks of ice with his eye landing on the body-shaped ice with an ice block sealing back up the body. Scooby leaps over the Skeleton Men, pulls down the Zombie's trousers to reveal underwear and uses Miner 49er's pickaxe like a springboard and flies into the air. The Pterodactyl Ghost swoops in to try and snag the control panel Shaggy tosses to Scooby. Scooby grabs the control panel and the Pterodactyl Ghost flies straight into the Tar Monster's belly and drowns.

With the Evil Masked Figure watching on, Scooby activates the machine and the monsters all die out, the Pterodactyl Ghost presumably crushed or drowned by the Tar Monster's body, as he is a remote control monster and is defeated, but a costume remains. Miner Forty-niner and the Zombie fall to dust (although the Miner 49er and Zombie's clothes were the ones that didn't fall to dust, except for their skin) and the Skeleton Men transform back to costumes soon after. The Tar Monster releases the gang from his grasp and then drowns in his own body, his single eye exploding (although his body turned into a costume and the eye fell back on the costume). The Evil Masked Figure tries to flee, but collapses on the catwalk and surrenders.

Outside, the press and the citizens of Coolsville flock to the mine like sheep. Mystery, Inc., then unmasks the villain and reveals it to be Heather Jasper Howe, and her cameraman Ned is also arrested for helping her in her plot. But then, Heather's face is ripped off to reveal none other than Dr. Jonathan Jacobo. Everyone is quite taken aback by this, especially Wickles and a female police officer who literally leaps back in surprise. Velma explains that Jacobo survived his fall off the prison wall and into the ocean, and plotted against Mystery, Inc., by creating the falsified "Jasper-Howe" persona to turn the press and the Coolsville citizens against them and then framed Wickles by putting the book and the Black Knight Ghost in his mansion. Jacobo and Ned are arrested and taken away and everyone in Coolsville loves Mystery Inc. again.

Velma and Patrick become an item, Fred and Daphne embrace each other in a kiss, and Shaggy finds Captain Cutler's lifeless helmet and puts it on as a goof while the press takes pictures of him. However, Scooby mistakes him for a real monster and clobbers him with a sound speaker. Upon Shaggy revealing himself to just wearing a helmet, Scooby pounces him and starts licking his face. Afterwards, Mystery Inc., Patrick, Wickles and the rest of Coolsville gather at the Faux Ghost and dance to "Shining Star", sung by Ruben Studdard.

Production[]

Possible monsters[]

As with most films, not every scene and character make it to the final film. Early in production, it was planned to have all the monsters come to life. However, due to budget cuts and a change in effects studios, this plan was left behind. Though some made it further into production than others that were left on the concept stage. Some of which are listed below:

  • Redbeard's Ghost: One of the monsters that was to appear in the film, who sadly didn't make it. Although his costume, ghost ship and portrayer, C.L. Magnus, appeared, played by Stephen E. Miller. This Monster did however appear in the THQ PC video game adaption. Since the ghost ship appears, that implied that the costume was brought to life and is steering the ghost ship off screen.
  • Creeper: The Creeper was one of the first three monster made for the film, but due to shooting the film in Canada, the previous effects team of Edge EFX was pulled off production and a Canadian studio took over instead. The Canadian studio decided to scrap the Creeper during this time. Concept art is still viewable in the DVD's special features.[1]
  • Ghost Clown: The Ghost Clown was going to appear in the film and would've been played by Paul Becker. A picture of said actor in costume was taken proving this.
  • Headless Horseman: The Headless Horseman was going to appear in the film as is seen by an animatronic of the monster's head. The head was used in the costume seen in the movie though.

Notes/Trivia[]

  • The video version is re-edited slightly; the film caused controversy upon release when concern parents found its comical drug references to be a little too out-in-the-open and explicit for a film intended for children. The VHS and DVD releases excise some of this objectionable humor, and the theatrical version has never been re-released.[citation needed]
  • On of the DVD's special features has a game which shows a new monster in the Museum: The Mermaid. It also shows that the Mermaid's Ghost has a cartoon version in the title about this gilled goon.
  • Shaggy now wears a white sleeved undershirt beneath his green t-shirt and Shaggy is no longer a vegan in this movie, as he eats and references the fast food restaurants Burger King and/or KFC.
  • Ruben Studdard was one of the winners of American Idol.
  • There is product placement for either Burger King or KFC in 3 places, depending on the version you watch.
    • In one, Scooby eats a BK Whopper in the Theatrical, VHS, and DVD version or a KFC Fried Chicken Sandwich in the Netflix version.
    • When Scooby accidentally spills Shaggy's Milkshake on the chauffeur, it is either a KFC milkshake in the UK & Netflix version or a Burger King milkshake in the theatrical, VHS, and DVD version.
    • When Shaggy says why the gang can't investigate a haunted Burger King, the line was redubbed to say KFC instead of Burger King on the UK & Netflix version.
  • This movie and the previous one were teased in Looney Tunes: Back in Action, when Shaggy and Scooby were berating Matthew Lillard about how he performed in the film.
  • In an interview with Daily Radar about the previous movie, James Gunn confirmed that events similar to the first two seasons of Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! and both seasons of The New Scooby-Doo Movies took place in the movie's alternate continuity.[2]
  • This movie also establishes, through the accumulated disguises in the Coolsonian Criminology Museum, that events similar to all three seasons of The Scooby-Doo Show happened in this continuity, as well as the events of Chickenstein Lives. Though since Mystery Inc. claims the Black Knight Ghost was their first case, they may have faced off against Chickenstein at a later point in time, compared to their mainstream counterparts, who fought Chickenstein prior to the Black Knight.
  • The Pterodactyl Ghost in The Scooby-Doo Show's Hang in There, Scooby-Doo was an armored truck driver named Johnny, whose crime was bootlegging cassettes, not robbing banks.
  • In order to promote the film a flash game called "Escape From The Coolsonian" was released. The game was a basic point and click adventure. The game is however infamous for having one of the scariest jump scares in a video game.
  • As of 2021, this is the last live action Scooby-Doo production in which Frank Welker doesn't voice Scooby-Doo.

To coincide with the movies release, 2 video games (Microsoft Windows PC and Gameboy Advance) and a Adobe Flash game were released. The PC and GBA version go by the same name as the movie while the Adobe Flash version adds "Escape From The Coolsonian" to the end of the title.
