For other versions, see Bluestone the Great (disambiguation).

Bluestone the Great was an ex-magician wanted in six states. He took the guise of the Phantom while on Haunted Isle to find and steal a supposed treasure buried there.

Physical appearance[]

Bluestone is an adult male, with a lean figure and a long nose and chin. He has short, black hair, sideburns, and a mustache. He wore a white sheet from his Phantom costume, along with green gloves.

Gold Key version[]

His design is mostly unchanged other then him having a white streak in the middle of his hair and the lack of green gloves.

Personality[]

Despite his fugitive status for crimes in several states, Bluestone's demeanor was not malicious or cruel. He only wanted to keep away intruders while he searched for pirate treasure. He possessed a mild degree of hospitality when he used a levitation trick to offer a ham sandwich with mustard to a frightened Shaggy, who desired such a sandwich to calm his nerves.

Once he was captured and unmasked, Bluestone was initially displeased at how his plans were foiled, but smiled when Fred inquired about his ability to walk through walls (which he referred to as “one of my best acts”). He politely asked to demonstrate how his illusion of intangibility worked, as a final magic performance. Velma Dinkley complimented his skills, “I must admit, Mr. Bluestone, you’re a good magician, but a bad Phantom.”

Skills and abilities[]

Being a skilled magician, he possessed several props that served as devices to frighten intruders, including a skull with glowing eyes and a spooky voice, a levitating ham sandwich and jar of mustard, plus a suit of armor that could swing an axe, a flying carpet, and the "sawing a person in two" trick with a box and saw. His best ability was an illusion of intangibility, consisting of a trick mirror and a special projector, allowing him to cast his image anywhere he wanted, and by stepping away from the mirror, giving the appearance of walking through walls.

Bluestone the Great unmasked

Bluestone unmasked.

When the gang ran their boat aground on Haunted Isle, they decided to see if anyone at Vasquez Castle could be of assistance. On the way to the castle they found warnings telling them to leave and later discovered that the castle seemed to be haunted by a Phantom capable of walking through walls.

After several encounters with the Phantom and a bit of sleuthing, they were able to trap the ghost and call the police for help. With the assistance of the police officer who responded to their call for help, the man behind the Phantom was identified as Bluestone the Great, an ex-magician who began using his talents as a part of a string of crimes. Wanted in six states for various offenses, he had made his way to Haunted Isle to search for Vasquez the pirate's legendary lost treasure, using illusions to scare tourists and other treasure hunters away. Though the gang determined the illusions behind many of the Phantom's actions, they were unsure of how he appeared to walk through walls. Bluestone, proud that he had fooled them, offered to reveal his secret: a combination of mirrors and a projector created the ghostly appearances and disappearances of the Phantom. Bluestone was arrested by the officer and was to be transported to jail.

Appearances[]

Notes/Trivia[]

  • Bluestone the Great is simply referred to as "Magician" on his model sheet.[1]
  • His appearance (and name) are based on stage magician Harry Blackstone Jr.
  • He's the first culprit in the series not to appear before his unmasking.
  • A delighted Bluestone hands the ropes he was tied with to Fred just before demonstrating his projector illusion. The surrounding dialogue and timing make it implausible that someone would have untied him and, had Fred (or anyone else) untied him, he would have no reason to be holding the ropes. This suggests Bluestone used his skills as a magician to untie himself without anyone noticing.
  • It is unknown why he is wanted in six states.
