Newell unmasked.
When the detective was presumed dead and Newell got nothing in the will, he tried to steal one poem from Durant's collection of Edgar Allan Poe memorabilia to remember his by. He called in the gang to investigate the theft to throw off suspicion, then tried to scare them away by dressing up as the orangutan from Poe's Murders in the Rue Morgue. He was caught, but Durant turned up alive (having faked his death to catch an enemy), and Newell was forgiven.
