Ready to Scare is the fifth episode of the third season of What's New, Scooby-Doo?, and the thirty-third overall.

Premise[]

The gang heads to Paris to see Daphne's cousin Danica win "Model of the Year", but they discover she has been abducted by a gargoyle from the Notre Dame cathedral that has come to life.

Cultural references[]

  • The title "ready to scare" is a play on "ready to wear," a common fashion industry term.
  • Notre-Dame de Paris (1831) is an epic novel by Victor Hugo, detailing the lives of several characters who live in or near the great Cathedral. In English it is usually printed as The Hunchback of Notre Dame after its main character, Quasimodo. The hunchback in this episode appears to be based on the version in Disney Company's 1996 animated film, who is more cuddly and lovable than the tormented and melancholy version in the novel. Disney also had a two-season show called Gargoyles which was urban-fantasy and seems to be referenced in this episode.
  • Sonny Les Matines' name sounds like a line in the French children's song "Frere Jacques", about the ringing of church bells. Scooby and Shaggy recite a line from this song (which has been traced back to around 1780) when he tells them his name.

Notes/trivia[]

  • "The Mystery Machine" written on the side of the van has been changed to "Le Machine Mystere".
  • When Fred mentions putting a coin into a telescope, Velma comments, "They're francs." Fred then says, "I thought they were mine". This anachronistic reference (see goofs) is a reference to Fred's and Scooby's voice actor, Frank Welker.
  • At the end, Danica is wearing Daphne's original outfit, only in inverse colours (e.g. light purple dress with a dark purple lining).
  • Daphne's the third member of the gang to personally know the culprit -- in Daphne's case, the culprit was her cousin, Danica.
    • Velma was the first to personally know the culprit -- in her case, it was her old lab partner from science, Gibby Norton.
    • Shaggy was the second to personally know the culprit -- in his case, it was his old friend, Meadow.
  • Danica looks identical to Daphne, with the only real difference being their hair colors (Danica has black hair while Daphne has red hair). Daphne mentions having an uncle named Julius who apparently looks a lot like her and Danica, because Daphne claims, "Even my Uncle Julius looks like Danica when he's in heels."
  • At least in the WNSD-continuity, Fred's apparently allergic to cats, because when Velma mentions the Parisian-catacombs, Fred (not realizing what the catacombs actually are) claims to be allergic to cats.

Animation mistakes and/or technical glitches[]

  • None known.

Inconsistencies/continuity errors and/or goofs/oddities[]

  • A small brick wall for Daphne briefly materialises in the middle of the road just so she can sit while putting on her galoshes.
  • Velma mentioned the coin Fred was using was a Franc, but France had actually stopped using Francs as its currency in 2002, three years before this episode aired.
    • This may have been deliberately ignored for the sake of a pun on the name Frank Welker.
  • It's almost impossible for Scooby, Shaggy, Fred and Velma to beat Daphne and Danica (the latter still in her Gargoyle disguise) to the exact location before they do.
  • Shaggy never mentioned the gargoyle being ticklish to Fred.
    • Also it wouldn’t have worked due to the costume.
  • The person in the gargoyle costume would’ve been killed after being hit by a train.
