The Haunting of Hambridge is the first level in the 2004 video game, Scooby-Doo! Mystery Mayhem.

Premise[]

The Hambridge University Library is haunted by ghosts who have been released from the mysterious book, the Tome of Doom. But there appears to be more to this than meets the eye.

Synopsis[]

GC/PS2/Xbox Version[]

On a dark and stormy night at the Hambridge Library, a guard patrols one of the rooms when he hears a noise. Unexpectedly, there is a green glow behind him, causing the guard to turn and scream for help before running out of the building.

The next day, Mystery Inc. travels to the library where Velma's childhood librarian, Mr. Alan Dinsdale, is waiting for them. After they arrive, he reminds Velma about an overdue book she didn't pay for and tells them that the library is haunted by real ghosts. Fred decides that they should split up and look for clues and tells Scooby and Shaggy to look for clues in the basement; they both refuse out of fear. Dinsdale introduces the gang to his assistant Walter Peabody, who is in charge of restoring old books at the library. Peabody tells them that he lost the key to the basement, so Velma tells everyone to keep and eye out for it.

The gang splits up and enters the library. After going inside, Shaggy and Scooby spot a Phantom Shadow before it runs off. Shaggy tells Scooby to go ahead while he waits for him, but Scooby calls him a coward, which Shaggy denies. The player is then shown how to control the characters, save using cameras, use costumes to fool ghosts all in the main room, and find clues to show to Velma. After getting past the Phantom Shadow from earlier, they head up to the second floor. There, they find two doors.

They go into the right door to find some kind of storage room and leap over some boxes to get to the left side which had a door that was locked from the inside. The duo push a button to move a ladder to get the Annex key on top of the shelves. They use the key to unlock the door on the first floor, in the room behind it, they see a book cart blocking the way. Scooby squeezes under some tables to push several book carts out of the way, allowing Shaggy to reach Scooby. In the next room, they elude another ghost by tiptoeing. After their first encounter with a Shadow, they see a new ghost who nearly spots them. This ghost notably uses doors and Scooby and Shaggy noticed it walked, which is weird to them since it's meant to be a ghost. They follow this strange walking ghost and find the door leading to the basement aka the old library that Peabody mentioned.

After going through three hallways full of Shadows, Scooby and Shaggy find the hideout key behind a door at the end of the third hallway. They use that key to unlock a door in the middle of the second hallway and find a new section in the basement and they find a room at the back end of it. In this room, Scooby and Shaggy find an odd book with a skull on it. Shaggy picks it up while Scooby finds a scrap of receipt. Suddenly, a Phantom Shadow enters the room and approaches the duo. Scooby jumps into Shaggy’s arms, causing him to drop the book. When the Phantom Shadow hovers over the book, a ghostly hand grabs and sucks it into the book. Shaggy grabs it and decides to show the book to the others.

They leave the room and find a Velma, who is missing her glasses. Velma tells them she was following a rather strange-looking ghost (presumably the white ghost from earlier) when she tripped over a book and lost her glasses. She pleads to Shaggy and Scooby to help her find them. They go to the other end of the basement hideout where they find Velma’s glasses on top of a bookshelf. Shaggy returns the glasses and Velma thanks them and asks about the mysterious book Shaggy’s holding. Shaggy explains that he and Scooby found the book and tell her that it can capture spirits. Shaggy gives Velma the book; Velma says its looks like a medieval grimoire and she begins reading it. Velma notices some missing pages, but notices some instructions on how to capture spirits such as needing the right page to capture the right kind of creature. Right now, there's only one page, and that is the ghost page. She then explains the various game mechanics of this strange book, which require having to collect wisps to power the book. Wisps can also be obtained from glowing green skulls. After they catch all the ghosts in the hideout (removing the force field blocking the exit), they begin leaving, but in the hallway, they find the Shadow page. They continue going back to the lobby while using the book to capture various monsters to remove the force fields blocking the doors.

When Scooby and Shaggy return to the lobby, they spot Fred and Daphne. When Fred asks if they found any clues, Shaggy shows him the book and tells Fred that Velma said it was a grimoire. Velma and Dinsdale enter the room and Dinsdale explain that this grimoire is very rare and infamous and it's known as the Tome of Doom. Scooby and Shaggy get scared by this name and begin passing it to each other. Dinsdale remarks that it's quite odd since they already have one that's in this very lobby. Velma figures out that one of them is probably fake (presumed to be the one in the glass case) and Fred wishes they had more clues. During Scooby and Shaggy’s bickering, some papers fly out as Velma tells them to stop fighting. When Velma asks what they are, Shaggy just tells her there are just some papers Scooby found. Velma says they look like receipts from a bookbinder's shop. Shaggy begins shaking in fear and he tells everyone to look up at the balcony since he had spotted the fake-looking ghost again. When the ghost sees everyone looking at him, he quickly shuts the door and escapes. Fred says they should try and capture him. He tells Shaggy and Scooby to head up the balcony in case of the ghost doubles back.

So Scooby and Shaggy do as he says and while the rest of the gang are looking for this fake ghost, Shaggy says they should just look at pictures of food. Shaggy finds a cookbook and begins to grab it, but the fake ghost pushes the bookshelf, causing it to spin a full 360, separating Shaggy from Scooby. Shaggy screams Scooby’s name in fear and Scooby looks behind himself calling Shaggy's name only to see he’s not there.

Boss fight[]

Part 1 Avoid the ghosts and find Shaggy in a maze made of bookshelves.

Part 2 After Scooby finds Shaggy, they can capture ghosts, which do damage to the boss's heath. During this part, the fake ghost will drop whips.

Ending[]

The fake ghost is cornered by the Phantom Shadow and he tries to control it; however, it attacks him instead. Scooby and Shaggy capture the fake ghost and high-five one another. Daphne questions why the fake ghost didn’t get sucked up by the Tome of Doom. Shaggy doesn’t know but he thinks the book is busted. Two security guards begin arresting the fake ghost. Velma says she thinks this “ghost” didn’t get sucked up because he’s not a ghost at all. Fred says “is that so ok let's see who this ghost is” and he unmasks the fake ghost and reveals him to be Walter Peabody. Dinsdale says how disappointed he is in this reveal. Velma says she figured it out when Shaggy showed her the receipts from the bookbinder's shop since Peabody, responsible for book restorations, didn’t want anyone to find out he had a fake Tome of Doom made while he kept the real one for himself. After Walter says he would have gotten away with it, he’s taken away by the police. Daphne questions why would he do such a thing and why did he rip pages from the real Tome of Doom. Even Velma admits she doesn't know yet. Dinsdale thinks perhaps he should hire Mystery Inc. to find out about those missing pages. Fred says it would be great, but they have a different job to do first at the Milton Brothers Movie Studio. Velma says she could meanwhile look over the Tome of Doom and see why Peabody tried to steal it. Dinsdale is fine with it as long as she doesn’t bring it back late. Dinsdale waves the gang off as they drive away. Daphne congrats themselves since they did a pretty good job at solving this case and Shaggy makes fun of Dinsdale for being scarier than a ghost. However, on the street, there is a mysterious woman in a trench coat who seemed to be spying on them.
