It was a wild animal. It proved to be less fierce than the feral cats also roaming the preserve.

Mr. Farnham put fake fangs on a tiger to create Sabertooth, to drive Dr. Herriot off the land so he could reclaim it and then sell valuable prehistoric artifacts and fossils that were preserved in a cave on the land.
