Fred's family was from New Lichfield, Massachusetts.[1] His father used to take him to the Nautical History Museum all the time, and it was there he met and became close friends with Albert Sylver.[2]

Fred graduated from Coolsville High School, where Principal Weathers was in charge. When he visited the school later, an old teacher named Mrs. Harpee recognized him, called him "Frederick," and tried to give him detention.[3]
