Rio de Janeiro, commonly and simply Rio, is the second most important city in Brazil and Latin America (behind São Paulo). The city was the country's second federal capital, from 1763 to 1960 (the first federal capital was Salvador, in Bahia state). The city is famous for its annual carnival.
