Ronald Adair is supposedly a theater critic who lost his job and became a bitter enemy of Dorian Wormwood the retired stage actor. Actually, he is Wormwood in disguise.

He seemed pleased by the news that Dorian Wormwood had been murdered, but denied he had anything to do with it.
