* Shaggy and Scooby obviously just want the gang to go with them, but if they didn't want to go then they could've just gone alone as they spent a fare share of time away from the gang (albeit much of the time with [[Scrappy-Doo]]) unless they are being ignored. This at least proves a little that the duo just want Fred for his van and they have to take him a long because he won't lend it to them. The fact that they're a close-knit group would explain why Daphne ''has'' to go along despite clearly not wanting to (and likely because she has nothing better to do.)

Scooby-Doo! WrestleMania Mystery is the twenty-first in a series of of direct-to-video films based upon Hanna-Barbera's Scooby-Doo Saturday morning cartoons. It was released on DVD and Blu-ray on March 25, 2014.

Continuity

Notes/trivia

  • Cartoon Network has changed the film's subtitle to The WWE Mystery.[8]
  • Due to being a tie-in to 2014's WrestleMania, this film was promoted more than the other ones have been (although there was no novelization, however this isn't the first time a film hasn't recieved one):
    • Mattel released two 2-packs including Scooby and either John Cena or Sin Cara.
    • WWE released t-shirts.
    • A red carpet premiere was held March 22 at Tribeca Cinemas in New York City. In attendance was the wrestlers who voiced themselves (except John Cena), Sin Cara, Stephanie McMahon, Brandon Vietti, Jay Bastian and Scooby-Doo (played by a costumed performer). The Mystery Machine was also featured.[9]
    • Scooby-Doo (again played by a costumed performer) appeared on the March 24 edition of WWE Raw, the day before the film was released on DVD and Blu-ray. He stood outside the ring, as Sin Cara fought against Damien Sandow. Sin Cara and Scooby also made their entrance from the Mystery Machine, while scenes from the film accompanied by the opening theme played on the big screen. Michael Cole also commentated.
  • Once again Anarbor's cover of the What's New, Scooby-Doo? theme song is exclusive to the trailer to the film.
  • This is the first time real-life celebrities have voiced themselves in standard continuity since the What's New, Scooby-Doo? episode, Reef Grief!, and the first time celebrities appear in a DTV film.
  • The opening theme presents several elements of Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!, including:
  • A couple of miles away from WWE City is a greeting sign with an additional collossal wooden figure of Triple H waving with his coming from a speaker box.
  • It seems that Sin Cara is the only wrestler who owned a car.
  • When Shaggy and Scooby laugh when the former realizes that the "monster" was actually just Scooby, it is similiar to the scene in the Scooby-Doo! The Mystery Begins continuity when they both accidently scare each other (which is also the first time they meet).
  • Although different circumstances, Fred's camera being destroyed and losing evidence is similar to when he lost his (and Daphne's) film recorder with needed evidence in Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island.
  • Kane's long hair in real-life is just apart of his act, but in this film it's real.
  • The Mystery Machine has been redesigned, somewhat similar to how it looked in the Shaggy & Scooby-Doo Get a Clue! TV series. It now has a front plate which reads "The Mystery Machine".
  • Velma mentions a new relative, her Grampa Dinkley.
  • Shaggy breaks the fourth wall when he mentions the fact that they wear the same outfits every day when Daphne and Velma complain to him about forgetting their luggage. Also, when Daphne only has two scarfs to choose from she asks Velma which one is better with a predictable response.
  • The two times Cena uses Five Knuckle Shuffle, Michael Cole refers to it as his "vintage" Five Knuckle Shuffle.
  • Scooby is in one of his trademark poses when he looks up at Shaggy after the former reveals himself to not be a monster.
  • Daphne's replaced her small handbag from Scooby-Doo! Legend of the Phantosaur with a bigger one, resembling the green one she had in the WNSD era.
  • This time it's Fred's turn to be jealous of Daphne.
  • Clay dropped the Funkasaurus image in January 2014, two months for the film's release in March.
  • This isn't the first time Sgt. Slaughter has been animated; his likeness (and voice) was used in the 80's G.I. Joe TV series and film.
  • Scooby and Shaggy refer to Mr. McMahon's wresting career by all the ring names they give him.
  • Shaggy doesn't know what "accomplice" and "schematic" mean.
  • When the group come to a stop when they try to tell Ms. Richards that WrestleMania should be stopped, the entire time Fred, Daphne and Velma are in their trademark poses with Fred's hand in his pocket, Daphne's hands at her waist, and Velma's arms behind her back.
  • Since this film is not scored by Robert J. Kral, it's notable for not having music from Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated play over the exposition of the gang explaining the culprit's motive.
  • The ending of the film had already been spoilt a bit as it was used in the trailer.

Cultural references

  • In the teaser, when Miz first encounters the Ghost Bear, he refers to it as "Yogi". Ruben also refers to it as Smokey Bear, or Smokey the Bear, the public service announcement macot against forest fires.
  • Cena's trademark catchphrase, "You can't see me", is used in the film.
  • Shaggy calls Cena the "Doctor of Thuganomics" which is one of his ring names.
  • The businesses in WWE City are named after subjects relating to and wrestling in general:
  • Through one way or another the entrance music of John Cena, Miz, Vince McMahon, A.J. Lee, and plays in the film.
  • The Sin Cara in this film is based on the second and current performer, Jorge Arias. This Sin Cara can actually talk and in English, too. The character's grandfather may be based on the first performer, Luis Urive.
  • The wrestling moves used in the film are based on the ones used in real-life.
  • Miz and Jimmy Hart both own iPod-looking devices.
  • Brodus refers to his entrance music, "Somebody Call My Momma", when he says "Somebody call your Momma" when facing the Ghost Bear, and when a man in the WrestleMania crowd held a sign saying "You'd better Call Your Momma!".
  • A Slammy Award is a real award given out by WWE.
  • The hall of fame plaque in the stadium's awards display lists the following people: Brandon Vietti, David Wilcox, Kyle Stafford, Mark Wilson, Owen Stafford, Kai Vietti, Miles Stafford, John Beach and Steve Jones. The names are from people who worked on the film and some of their family members.[10]
  • During the broadcast of WrestleMania on television, several scenes were shown of four girls watching the main event on their sofa, resembling Cassie Sandsmark (Wonder Girl), Crock (Artemis), Zatanna Zatara (Zatanna), and Megan Morse (Miss Martian) from Young Justice: Invasion, the second season of Young Justice on Cartoon Network. Brandon Vietti, who directed this film, was the co-creator of the Young Justice TV series.
  • People from the audience hold up signs referencing wrestlers' different gimmicks, including "Cenation".

Animation mistakes and/or technical glitches

  • None known.

Inconstitencies/continuity errors and/or goofs/oddities

  • Miz's clothes and belongings disappear after the Ghost Bear knocks him out of them, or they're just off-screen.
  • The fine print which appears on Shaggy's TV screen after Mr. McMahon's speech, just happens to mention most of the wrestlers who appear in the film who they may meet in person in WWE City, no wrestlers who exists outside of the film.
  • Both Shaggy's home and the Burger Binge could be in Coolsville, but that's not explicitly clear and would only be an assumption that they would be in Coolsville.
  • The last place Shaggy lived was in a two-story house with both Scooby and Fred in Coolsville in the What's New, Scooby-Doo? episode, A Scooby-Doo Valentine. While not explicit, but implied, Fred now lives seperately from the guys.
  • The gang seem unusually distant at the Burger Binge with Fred, Daphne and Velma involved with their own thing.
  • Shaggy and Scooby obviously just want the gang to go with them, but if they didn't want to go then they could've just gone alone as they spent a fare share of time away from the gang (albeit much of the time with Scrappy-Doo) unless they are being ignored. This at least proves a little that the duo just want Fred for his van and they have to take him a long because he won't lend it to them. The fact that they're a close-knit group would explain why Daphne has to go along despite clearly not wanting to (and likely because she has nothing better to do.)
  • Fred was a major wrestling fan in the What's New, Scooby-Doo? episode, Wrestle Maniacs, but here he has to be guilted in to going to WrestleMania. Daphne also had no problem in going to the Bosepheus Jumbo Wrestling Bowl in the aformentioned episode, but she really doesn't want to go to WrestleMania at all.
  • When Daphne remembers Scooby saying how his fur didn't even grow back in some places, it sounds different, but this could be the way it sounded to her, making her more prone to agree.
  • Daphne's glass of water at the Burger Binge disappears when she agrees to go to WrestleMania.
  • One Attack Snacks box has the writing back to front while another is circular.
  • Are the gang that incompetent that they leave Shaggy (and even Scooby) to pack their bags for the trip? (Fred even seems amused by it.) Even if they did only wear one outfit they would still need another set of fresh clothing, not to mention underwear. They also apparently went without a toothbrush and apparently slept in the exact same clothing the entire time there.
  • It's implied, but not explicitly confirmed that those who work at the WWE live in WWE City. It's unknown if this applies to everyone of its employees.
  • It's unknown if Mr. McMahon actually owns the restaurant with his name and face on it or it's just a tourist attraction.
  • The relationship is suggestive yet likely purely innocent between Daphne and Cena since she gives him her phone number, home and email address, and scarf size. To most people this would come off as being creepy and desperately forward, but apparently he doesn't mind. Cena is actually seemingly oblivious to her feelings or is at least modest about it, unlike in the What's New, Scooby-Doo? episode, Riva Ras Regas, where the feelings between Fred and Lindsay Pagano was at least mutural (and that of course still went nowhere). It's also perhaps a little inappropriate (given the way she also acts around him) since Daphne's age is ambiguous and Cena is clearly an adult, but then again so was Bram, from Scooby-Doo! Music of the Vampire.
    • Of course it's all supposed to be for laughs, but on top of that (no pun intended), Daphne's crush on Cena seems to greatly contradict the events of the previous film, where it was perfectly established by Daphne herself that Fred was her one and only love interest. (Of course they'll never actually happen so she wouldn't lose anything by seeking Cena.) Another laugh of the film is that she hates the entire trip (and clearly goes under protest) until she sees Cena take off his sweater, revealing his greatly worked out body, but ends up coming off fickle, especially since she was a little bit rude (albeit indirectly) to even him right up until that point.
  • There's odd "vocal effects" such as when Shaggy laughs in excitement from recieving the free tickets from Cena, and a crowd member's off-screen "a ha" reaction to when Cole's second desk is broken.
  • The Mystery Machine disappears after the gang arrive in WWE City.
  • Despite WWE being televised, no film crews are visible.
  • Santino's sockpuppet comes from nowhere.
  • It's unclear if Sin Cara can actually talk or chooses not to because he can't speak English.
  • Cookie referred to the gang as "wacky kids", and he's not wrong.
  • Being guests at the Rock Yard was apart of the video game dance prize, but when Cookie offers to take the gang there Scooby and Shaggy react excitedly as if they've forgot. They were either possibly absent-minded about it or just caught up in the excitement, but presumably they also told the rest of the gang and they don't mention it either or they were just letting him be polite. He also could've just been personally offering them a ride (inspite of the fact it was Sin Cara who drove them all).
  • Daphne complained about missing her luggage, but she managed to produce her handbag and pom poms.
  • Cookie's leg brace is over his clothing when it would probably be more appropriate and realistic underneath (especially when there are more comfortable fitting ones out there in real-life), but having it always visible is better for the audience to not forget it's there.
  • Vicious's traveling show isn't identified on-screen and they apparently don't try and restrain him when he loses control, perhaps because they were scared off.
  • Perhaps because it's a cartoon, wrestlers can be formidable opponents to bears and also survive. It's made trivial of the cruelity of an animal being forced to fight, although it was in a small town a hundred years ago, also laws are different in a cartoon. The same could also be said about the Ghost Bear if it wasn't for the fact it was a monster.
  • When Kane first came on stage to announce wanting his title back, his entrance theme, "Veil Of Fire", and the associated pyro effects played, despite there being no audience.
  • The date marked for WrestleMania on Cookie's calender is March 31, but in real-life it actually happened on April 6. Perhaps it happened on the latter date within the Scooby-Doo universe?
  • The WWE City News front page report on how Sin Cara Grande saved the day from the Ghost Bear, which is on the stadium's commerative display, would be impossible since WWE City didn't exist then.
  • The earpieces are so small that it looks like they're just communicating by touching their ears.
  • Perhaps due to it being the film's limited time, Scooby, Shaggy and Kane are the only contestants in WrestleMania.
  • It's unknown what happened to the EMP device and the fake belt after Kane tossed it aside.
  • For some reason the "flame" in the Ghost Bear's skeletal face turns off when it is finally defeated.
  • Daphne putting her hand on Fred's shoulder could be seen as a moment between them or it could be seen as him accepting her and Cena.
  • When Shaggy's stuck in the ring's ropes during the fight with Kane, he seems to have leg hair. This is especially odd as he has never been shown with any form of body hair in previous cartoons, and weirder still is the fact that he didn't have this leg hair earlier in the movie or before the fight.
