Reception
The first Scooby-Doo mystery while not fairplay still with unexpected scenes and genuine humor energizes a classic magician's trick. Mr. Tyler as usual creates monsters--read persons in masks--based upon legend.
Besides folklore, Mr. Tyler considers the police involvement during the case. His two cops are amusing send-ups of Mulder's and Scully's varying attitudes. At one point the believing officer who Joe Staton draws as stuck in the seventies says "I'm just remaining open to all possibilities."
The rest of the artwork by Mr. Staton who with an unparalleled feel for the characters portrays dimensions both physical and emotional for Scooby and the Gang. The scene where Daphne and Velma tease a Shaggy soon to be in drag is particularly noteworthy for its novelty and comic timing. [1]
